Brushes

It is a good idea to have a variety of different sizes and shapes of brush, including wide, flat brushes for blocking in base washes and round brushes with a pointed tip for creating fine detail.

The wash

This is the most basic technique, forming the basis of probably every watercolour painting you will create. Washes are best applied with a wide flat brush and are used to block in an area of your drawing with tone. There are two types of wash, flat and gradated. The flat wash is tonally even and is applied using horizontal strokes, each brush stroke loaded with the same amount of pigment in order to maintain consistency of tone. The gradated wash, as the name suggests, fades from dark to light, so with each horizontal stroke you need to make sure your brush is loaded with an increasingly dilute pigment solution. Washes are a great way to start your drawings, creating a tone to work into. Make sure you allow base washes to dry thoroughly before working into them to avoid smudging.
